Lauren Cohan as Maggie Greene surveying her domain. Sunday night’s episode of The Walking Dead was perhaps the most balanced episode of the season. I didn’t hate it like I’ve hated much of Season 8, but I didn’t love it either. It was thoroughly “Ok” with some better and worse moments mixed in. As the episode’s title suggests, we follow the stories of Ezekiel, Rick and Maggie, though we also get some Michonne (at last!) and other characters like Carol, which also helps make this feel more balanced. I’m going to talk about what worked and what didn’t this episode.

We’ll start with the good before moving on to the bad. The Good I liked that we got a lot of different characters this episode without any one storyline feeling really rushed or out of place. Getting to see what Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) were up to this time around was a nice change of pace, but it was also nice to still follow Carol and Rick’s stories. The new character that Carl found and helped in the woods, Siddiq, is also a welcome addition to the show. Actor Avi Nash did a great job in this episode, bringing some much-needed top-notch acting to the show. He also seems like an incredibly likable character, which is something The Walking Dead needs more than ever following the death of Glenn.

It’s also interesting to have a Muslim character on the show. Siddiq is a welcome new character. I also liked that we got more zombies this episode, even if Carl should know better by now than to get himself stuck in that kind of avoidable situation. He was being gallant, I suppose, connecting with Siddiq over their mothers, trying to be braver and stronger than he actually is. Carl annoys me these days, but he did the right thing helping Siddiq and I like Siddiq, so I also enjoyed the Michonne/Rosita sequence even if, once again, they put themselves in danger for no good reason.

They stumble across some Saviors who are jerry-rigging a loudspeaker truck to draw the walkers away from the Sanctuary—a smart move that is interrupted with more than a little serendipity on the part of our heroes. The ensuing fight is fun and a helpful reminder that both Rosita and Michonne are still in pretty rough shape. Also, Rosita (Christian Serratos) blowing that guy up with a rocket launcher, however foolhardy, was hilarious. She probably shouldn’t be shooting off rockets in a closed space like that, but I’m not complaining. She also should have considered shooting him after he got in the truck, but oh well. The conflict over the prisoners is a nice internal struggle over the future of the communities.

I’m still unsure as to why Jesus (Tom Payne) is suddenly so strongly anti-killing, and I think in the end there will be blood. But I do like that there’s some butting of heads taking place. And throwing Gregory (Xander Berkeley) into the cage with the Saviors was great, if only because he’s such a loathsome spider. Then again, I’m sure he’ll be instrumental in whatever terrible thing happens next. Oh, and they should just kill the long-haired dude. To make an example if nothing else. Finally, I thought Melissa McBride had a great performance this episode.

Yes, I’ve said I’m tired of weepy Carol, but this was more of a heartfelt Carol, looking for love, trying to inspire Ezekiel to stop moping and do his job, hoping he’d tell her the real reason he paid her so many visits. Carol was definitely a highlight of the evening for me. I also liked how the kid latched on to her. Lirik lagu terserah mau bilang apa. She’s cursed with this everywhere she goes, ever since the death of her daughter and all the other tragedies involving children that have followed. Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimess The Bad There was plenty of bad to even out the good this Sunday. The worst, by far, was Rick (Andrew Lincoln) going to the Trash People by himself to ask them to switch sides and help them fight Negan. What on earth is he thinking?

Even if this is part of some elaborate scheme, it’s really dumb and puts him in extreme danger for no discernible reason. Also, the Trash People and their bad-hair-day-forever leader, Jadis, are intolerably awful.

Take Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and all their worst lines and most annoying traits and combine them and this is how much I hate the Garbage Pail Kids. They have no reason to exist. There is no reason they talk the way they do.

Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) sounds like Yoda half the time, without the charm. I don’t know how much more of this I can take. It’s like the showrunners decided they wanted to do Mad Max and just toss out any sliver of believability this show still had.

Let’s just say this: I hope Jadis and her entire crew go the way of Shiva, and soon. What an atrocious batch of characters. Of course, Rick is taken prisoner and locked up in a shipping container. Good job Rick! Other small details like Ezekiel saying that damn ‘Yet I smile’ line again really dragged me out of enjoying the episode. I appreciate his grief and self-doubt, but by the end of his scene with Carol he came off as kind of a big baby more than anything.

It was pretty disappointing. Likewise, Aaron (Ross Marquand) telling Maggie that he “still has moments” when he thinks Eric is alive is justbaffling. We were told this episode that it’s only been a day and a half since they assaulted the Sanctuary. This entire season has played out in less than two days in the show’s world. That means Eric probably hasn’t even been dead 24 hours yet.

Prisoners Aaron isn’t going to have “moments” when he feels like Eric is alive right now; he’s going to be in full shock and and utter disbelief. He’s going to either be angry and out for revenge, or he’s going to be bawling his eyes out or sitting there in horrified grief. He’s not going to act like the show has him acting, that’s for sure. If my spouse/partner/companion had just died hours before I wouldn’t be talking in mystified tones about how I still couldn’t believe they were dead. I’d be inconsolable or in a rage. They’ve really mangled Aaron’s story and character with this.

Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Tara (Alanna Masterson) showing up just in time to ram that truck felt a little too on-the-nose also, though I guess they could have followed Michonne and Rosita. But if they followed them, wouldn’t they have just made it to where their car was parked?

How did they manage to drive around to the exact spot they were at? And why not show them following to make this more apparent? Characters acting dumb bothers me. I’ve mentioned Carl’s foolish attack of those zombies and Michonne’s weird need to see the Sanctuary despite it being dangerous and foolhardy. Rick going to the Trash People is another. This stuff adds up. You can only have so many characters make bad choices at once.

Finally, I really didn’t like how they did the opening sequence with letters to each of the different compounds. Rick’s, in particular, felt like just another motivational speech which, if I’m to be completely blunt, are pretentious and idiotic.

I don’t hate the idea of the letters being sent around, but I also don’t get why we couldn’t just have people conveying the information through normal dialogue, or on walkie-talkies. How did Rick send his letter anyways? Or receive the others’ letters?

I’m confused. Verdict Overall, I thought this episode was better than pretty much any of the others this season.

It didn’t have as much action, but the dialogue wasn’t terrible and I like the new character, Siddiq. I think the main problem is just that it was largely just kind of there doing nothing as an episode. Not quite filler as we do get some important developments, but not quite necessary either. Not terrible, but also not great.

Don’t get me wrong, being “just okay” is a far cry better than most of Season 8′s episodes. But it’s still not good enough.

What did you think? I’d love it if you followed me on and and subscribed to my channel on. Also feel free to. Thanks for reading. RECOMMENDED BY FORBES.
